What to Look for in a Cafe
Exhibiting in cafes is always a bit tricky, because people are there for the food and not for the art. However, they generate a lot of traffic with all different types of clients. Yes, some places are more exclusive depending on the neighborhood, but some locations work for everyone. Case in point, this location is in a business district near a university, so it gets workers of all types as well as students, too.
Lighting is Key
Lighting is also an issue in cafes and restaurants, because they are designed to highlight the food and / or the atmosphere more than anything. If you choose the wrong spot, your paintings will be hidden in the shadows of the furniture and the bodies of the clients. You want to find a place where the work will be noticeable without mistake. At this location where I am exhibiting, there are basically two walls: one where the food is and one where the art is. Yes, everyone’s back will be turned away from the paintings to see the food, but because of the geometry of the café, it’s impossible to not see the artwork on the wall when you walk in. Plus, in order to find a seat, one must look at the wall with the artwork on it.
The cafe is Café Camões and is located at: Trav Nestor de Castro 259 lj9, 80020-120 Curitiba, Brazil.
