How to Write an Artist Grant (from the perspective of a grant reviewer)

How to write an artist grant is a difficult question to answer. Artists are good at making art, not doing administrative funding tasks. Yes, I'm an artist. I've written a lot of grants and I've only succeeded once. That's probably not a great score, but that's more to do with competition than anything else. I'm also a grant reviewer who is lucky enough to have gotten a behind-the-scenes look at what a good grant looks like. I wrote an article for the Maine Arts Journal on my experience as a grant reviewer to help artists navigate this tricky realm. To give...

Truth and Lies

Before he wrote The Wealth of Nations, in his book The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith pontificated something extreme with regards to charity. He roughly stated that we don’t know the difference between making ourselves feel good and “doing it for God” when being charitable towards other humans. This got him into some trouble with the church. It was only a little trouble because he had sprinkled in enough references to “God” to keep him safe. Smith had learned from his friend David Hume's failures. Hume didn’t lie, and society severely punished him both academically and socially. Adam Smith...

A Fallacy

A Conversation About the Market

[caption id="attachment_2927" align="alignleft" width="257"] A Fallacy by Greg Mason Burns - Photograph (2016)[/caption] A Conversation About the Market was recently published by The Prostitution of Art, which is a contemporary art blog based out of Boston. The site discusses the unfair treatment of artists by society / market. Articles are meant to be abstract criticisms of these forces in the contemporary world. Here is the link to the original text: The Prostitution of Art. A Conversation About the Market: I want to be creative, but society has its own rules. There are no rules for creativity, and yet here we are. Where? Here,...

Imago Mundi – Scotland Collection

Incomplete - oil on canvas - 2017 - by Greg Mason Burns. Imago Mundi Project - Scotland Collection I noted late in 2017 that the Luciano Benetton Imago Mundi project asked me to participate in it's collection. A collection of artworks from every single nation on earth, each country has it's own collection. Some countries, such as the UK, have separate pages for the nations that exist within the UK. I am participating in the Scotland Collection. Each artist receives a canvas of the same size, and that's to make it easier to store and exhibit all the different artworks. The artist...

Interview on Gazeta do Povo

English: I was recently interviewed on TV for eParaná´s program Cultura. Now I have an interview with Paraná´s largest newspaper, Gazeta do Povo. I´m happy with this interview, too. It was very well done. Both the journalist and cameraman were beyond professional and thorough. I hope you enjoy it. The video doesn't seem to be on the website anymore, unfortunately. However, the written interview on Gazeta do Povo is still there. The project I was working on at the time was oil-pastel-on-glass, and for this interview I did a quick drawing of castenholas, which was a part of a flamenco project...
